I feel quite cheeky really, the lady from our local council is, well I don’t mind admitting it quite hot! The thing is I am guilty of leading her on a little bit to get to talk with her at networking events. She has a great offer for me to take on an employee, something like pay half their salary for a year, however the last thing I will do right now, is take on an employee.
I have been the employee for the first half of my working life, and I know what that means, my Father was an employee all his life and he always says the best thing about a wage is that when that bell goes at 5 PM you drop whatever it is you are doing and head home to family and forget about work till the alarm goes off the next morning. He went on strike at times, and never had a good word for any employer, seems growing up whenever I heard a Shop Steward talk, it was always laden with the ‘us’ ‘we’ ‘our’ vocabulary, just speaking as I found, I am sure there were many good unionists who appreciated the fact that the boss probably betted his house, marriage, health, family and sanity on a whim of an idea that maybe, hopefully would work one day, and will always pay staff before themselves, and later on, when the fruits of this burden ripen and they become financially free, will sometimes attract suspicion, jealously and hatred from the workers.
Seems employment law is very heavily weighed on the side of the employee, and I glean this from all the times I feigned a silly illness or excuse to stay in bed or go the beach on a hot day when I had a job. I also listen to my peers, all the employers at networking events who tell me the ‘red tape’ and responsibility is difficult at the very least.
If however, I had to get a job and was unable to create my own business for whatever reason, I would find work through offering to work for companies on a commission only trial basis, I will ask the boss if I hit a number of sales in this trail period, then would they give me a full time job? This way you can prove your worth to any employer with no risk to the boss, then if you are as good as you say you are in the interview, you will sell loads and get the job you wanted. I, as a company owner, would never say no to this proposition.
I would always look to contract out before I took on an employee due to the fact that I am paying for a service rather than going through all the hoops of an taking on an employee, and if the work was not done I do not have to pay, and even have judicial recourse.
Just a tip for employees looking for work, set up a company it does not cost much and if you feel you are not making good headway at the interview stage for the job, an employer will start to listen if you said;
“Just thinking are you looking to contract this work out? I am a sole trader and could quote you for the work.
I tell my own daughters who are just coming to working age that No job is a bad thing if you are definitely going to learn and gain valuable experience, because we, the generation before, can tell you what you learn in the first ten years as an employee, can make or break your career forever.
Remember: JOB is an acronym for ‘Just Over Broke’
